What counts as ponding
- Persistent dark or discoloured patches marking where water sits
- Silt, debris rings, or vegetation growing in low areas
- Standing water within a defined area every rain
- Blocked, undersized, or missing drain strainers
- Water sitting against a curb, skylight, or equipment base
What is usually causing it

Why it matters even if it is not leaking
Ponding is not automatically a failure, but it stresses the parts of the assembly most likely to fail. Seams and flashings held under standing water are being asked to perform continuously rather than shedding; ultraviolet degradation and thermal cycling are different under a pond; and in a freeze-thaw climate, ice forming in a ponded area adds load and works at the membrane.
It also adds weight. Water is heavy, and a persistent pond on a deck already deflecting can deepen the deflection that caused it — a slow feedback loop worth catching early.
How it changes your options
The critical question for any significant work on a low-slope roof is whether the insulation beneath is wet, because that determines which options remain. A moisture survey is the instrument that answers it, and a coating or recover applied over wet insulation conceals the problem while adding cost.
Correcting drainage is a genuine decision point at replacement. A new membrane laid over an assembly that never drained will pond exactly as the old one did. Tapered insulation, additional drains, or crickets between drains are how the geometry gets fixed, and they belong in the conversation explicitly rather than being inherited by default.
