Why a roofing site has a page about insulation

Short answerBecause the most expensive winter roofing problems in Vermont are not caused by the roof. Ice dams, attic frost and thaw-time ceiling stains are caused by heat and moisture escaping into the attic, and replacing the covering does not address any of it.

Homeowners who do not know this spend money in the wrong place — sometimes an entire roof replacement — and then get the same leak the following February. Telling you plainly that the fix may be a different trade is more useful than selling you a roof, and it is the reason this page exists.

Who performs this work

Some roofing companies do attic air sealing and insulation; many do not, and several will tell you plainly that it is outside what they take on. Weatherisation and insulation contractors specialise in it, and in some cases an energy audit is the sensible first step because it identifies the leak paths rather than guessing at them.

What matters for you is that the two pieces of work are coordinated rather than sequenced by accident. If a roof is being replaced, decide the attic work before the roof is closed up. If the attic work comes first, make sure whoever does it does not block the intake ventilation the roof relies on.

What is an energy audit, and does it replace hiring an insulation contractor?

An energy audit is a diagnostic step — often using a blower door and infrared imaging — that identifies where air is actually leaking rather than guessing. It does not replace the contractor who performs the sealing and insulation work; it tells that contractor where to focus.

Can I air-seal my own attic instead of hiring someone?

Simple, accessible penetrations are within reach for a comfortable homeowner, but a thorough job — chimney chases, top plates, recessed lights, ductwork penetrations — is detailed work that is easy to do incompletely. A partial seal can leave the highest-leakage points untouched while giving a false sense that the job is done.

How long does attic air sealing and insulation typically take?

It depends on attic size, accessibility, and how much sealing and baffle work is needed, ranging from a partial day for a straightforward attic to longer for a complex or difficult-access space. Ask for a time estimate specific to your attic rather than a general figure.

Does spray foam insulation change the ventilation requirements?

It can. Some spray foam approaches create an unvented, conditioned attic assembly that is designed without traditional soffit-to-ridge ventilation at all, which is a fundamentally different system from a vented attic with baffles. This decision needs to be made deliberately and consistently, not mixed with vented-assembly assumptions.

Will air sealing my attic also lower my heating bills?

Very likely, since the same leaks that carry moisture into the attic also carry heat out of the house. Reduced heating cost is a common secondary benefit of the work described on this page, alongside stopping ice dams and attic frost, though the roofing site cannot quantify the savings for your specific house.

What is the difference between air sealing and a vapor barrier?

Air sealing stops bulk air movement — the leaks that carry both heat and moisture — through gaps, penetrations, and cracks. A vapor barrier slows the slower diffusion of moisture through building materials themselves. Air leakage moves far more moisture in a typical house than vapor diffusion does, which is why sealing is usually the priority.
