Different materials show impact differently
Age, material, hail size, wind, roof slope, support beneath the material, and prior condition all influence what an inspection finds. Normal aging, blistering, foot traffic, manufacturing variation, and mechanical damage can be confused with hail.
Ground-level documentation

- Hail size compared with a common object without exaggeration
- Photos of hail on the ground when safe
- Damage to vehicles, screens, siding, gutters, or plants
- Interior water or newly visible roof debris
- Any temporary protection or emergency work
What to ask from an inspection
Request photographs tied to roof areas and materials, an explanation of observed conditions, and a written repair or replacement scope where appropriate. The inspector should separate direct observations from opinions that require additional testing or policy review.
The insurer determines coverage. Avoid anyone who promises claim approval, deductible treatment, or a specific settlement before the carrier reviews the loss.
Safety matters after the storm
Do not climb onto a wet or damaged roof. Loose material, hidden openings, skylights, steep slopes, and unstable ladders create fall hazards even when the roof looks intact from the ground.
Inspection evidence should be tied to the specific roof
A photo of a mark is most useful when it is connected to a slope, material, orientation, and surrounding condition. Test areas or representative samples should be explained. Nearby collateral indicators can provide context but do not replace examination of the roof system.
Ask the inspector to distinguish functional concerns, cosmetic observations, normal aging, and conditions unrelated to the storm. That distinction improves both repair planning and communication with the insurer.
Avoid common post-storm pressure

What hail damage actually looks like
The soft-metal check is the practical one for a homeowner, because dents on vents, gutters and air-conditioning fins are visible without climbing and they establish that hail of a damaging size actually fell at your address — which is the first thing an adjuster wants to know.

Why the distinction from ordinary wear matters
Hail bruising and end-of-life granule loss can look similar to an untrained eye, and they are treated completely differently by an insurer. Bruising is impact damage from a datable event; granule loss is wear. Confusing the two produces either a denied claim or an expectation that was never realistic.
This is why documenting the date and the storm matters as much as documenting the roof. If hail fell in your area, that is a checkable fact, and connecting your damage to it promptly is far easier than arguing the link months later.
