Separate snow removal from structural evaluation
A roofing or snow-removal company can define its work. Structural capacity, observed movement, and building adequacy may require an engineer, building official, or other qualified authority.
Record the plan and result
Photographs and a written plan can mark priority zones, known features, staging limits, remaining snow, and prohibited drop areas. Afterward, record visible roof damage, blocked drainage, displaced components, or repair areas needing a separate proposal.
When removal is actually warranted
Vermont roofs are built for snow, and clearing every roof after every storm is neither necessary nor free of risk. Depth is also the wrong measure: weight depends on density far more than depth, and settled or wet snow can weigh several times what the same depth of fresh powder does. Rain falling onto an existing snowpack adds weight quickly and is one of the genuinely dangerous conditions.
Uneven loading is the factor most often underestimated. A roof carrying its design load uniformly can be in difficulty when wind drifting, or a sliding metal roof above, concentrates several times that load into one bay behind a dormer or against a wall.

Bad removal damages roofs routinely
The risk runs both ways. Falls from roofs and ladders in winter cause serious injuries every year, and this is genuinely not homeowner work beyond raking the lowest few feet from the ground. But careless removal also damages roofs: shovels and picks tear shingles and membrane, metal panels and their finishes get scratched and dented, vents and flashings break, and gutters are pulled apart by dumped snow.
Method separates a competent job from an expensive one. Removal should leave a protective layer of snow rather than scraping to the covering, should be chosen for the specific roof material, and should account for where the snow is going — dropping a roof's worth of snow onto a deck, a gas meter, an air conditioner, a shrub bed or an exit is its own kind of damage.
