Follow the water path
- Roof covering and valleys direct water downslope

Build one coordinated scope
When roofing, gutters, fascia, and soffits overlap, decide which trade owns each transition and concealed repair. A coordinated proposal reduces gaps where every company assumes another is responsible.
Document discharge beyond the roof edge
Follow each downspout to its termination and note extensions, underground connections, splash blocks, grading, walkways, neighboring property, and winter icing. The proposal should identify downstream work that needs a drainage, foundation, or site contractor.
Follow the water all the way to the ground
At the top end, drip edge is the detail that decides whether water enters the gutter or runs behind it down the fascia. Missing, too short, or misaligned drip edge is one of the most common reasons a fascia rots on an otherwise sound roof — and replacing the rotten wood without correcting the drip edge simply schedules the same repair again.
At the bottom end, where the downspout discharges decides whether the whole system helped. Downspouts terminating at the foundation move concentrated roof water directly to the place it does the most damage: wet basements, saturated backfill, frost pressure against foundation walls and eroded planting.

Overflow is not always a blockage
A gutter can be undersized for the roof area draining into it, have too few or undersized outlets, be pitched inadequately over a long run, or receive concentrated flow from a valley faster than it can carry away. If a gutter overflows in the same place every heavy rain while clean, capacity or pitch is the explanation, and cleaning it again will not help.
Winter changes the calculation. Gutters do not cause ice dams — attic heat loss does — but a gutter full of ice holds mass at the eave, and guard products vary widely in how they behave under ice and snow. Some shed reasonably; others trap ice, are difficult to clear, and complicate steam removal when a dam has to be dealt with.

Doing it with the roof
Anything that must be removed and reinstalled to complete the roof — drip edge, sometimes gutters — costs less to replace while the roof is open than as a separate later project. Drip edge and gutter interaction is also much easier to get right in one operation than in two, and aged gutters hung back on a new roof is a common regret.
If the fascia behind the gutter is soft, that work belongs in the same conversation. Replacing fascia without correcting what was wetting it, and without checking whether soffit intake ventilation survives the repair, is how a drainage problem becomes an attic moisture problem.
