Define removal and reinstallation
The documents should state who disconnects, removes, stores, protects, re-installs, tests, and documents each component; what roof attachments and flashings are used; and what happens if equipment or wiring is damaged or incompatible.
Protect both warranties
- Review existing roof and solar warranties before authorizing work
- Use approved attachment and flashing details
- Document roof condition before removal and before reinstallation
- Keep equipment serial, layout, attachment, and test records
- Clarify responsibility for a later leak near an attachment
- Coordinate future inspection and maintenance access
Schedule around the complete sequence
Roofing dates may depend on solar availability, electrical steps, permits, weather, material delivery, inspections, and utility procedures. Do not assume the roof crew can remove or reconnect equipment unless that work is explicitly within its qualified scope.
Sequence is the whole decision
This is the single most consequential thing to get right, and it is a sequencing question rather than a technical one. An array installed on a roof with eight years left commits you to a removal-and-reinstall project within eight years, plus the roof replacement itself, plus the coordination between two contractors and possibly two warranties.
The reverse order is straightforward: new roof, then array, with the mounting method agreed while the roof is being designed. If solar is even a possibility later, saying so before the roof is specified costs nothing and changes what a good roofer proposes.

How the mounting method changes things
On standing-seam metal, seam-clamped mounts commonly attach without penetrating the roof at all, which is one of metal's genuine practical advantages. On asphalt, mounts penetrate the covering and each penetration is a flashing detail that has to be executed properly — which means the quality of the solar installer's flashing work becomes part of your roof's performance.
That overlap is where responsibility gets murky. If a leak appears at a mount, whose problem is it? Establish before installation who warrants the penetrations, what the roofing warranty says about third-party attachments, and who you call first. Getting that in writing while both parties want your business is far easier than afterwards.

Snow, in this climate specifically
Panels change how snow behaves on a roof. They present a smoother surface than shingles, which can cause snow to release from the array in a slab rather than sliding gradually, and the edge of an array creates a step where snow and ice accumulate. Where that release lands matters just as it does with a metal roof.
Ask the installer how snow is expected to behave on your specific layout, whether retention is warranted below the array, and how the array edge interacts with eave ice. It is a question most homeowners never ask and most installers can answer.
