Why moss actually damages a roof
Moss keeps a layer of moisture in permanent contact with the covering, and constant dampness is what accelerates deterioration in every roofing material. On asphalt it works under and lifts shingle edges, which both exposes the fastener line and gives wind something to catch. On wood it prevents the drying that cedar depends on. In freeze-thaw conditions, water held in moss expands as it freezes and works at whatever it is sitting on.
The underlying cause is almost always slow drying — shade from trees or an adjacent building, a north-facing plane, or debris that holds damp. Removing the growth without addressing the shade means it returns.
Why pressure washing is the wrong answer
This matters because pressure washing is widely offered and looks impressively effective on the day. The damage it does is not visible immediately — it shows up as accelerated granule loss and shortened service life over the following years.
Gentler approaches exist and take longer. Ask what method is proposed, what chemicals if any are involved, how surrounding plantings are protected, and what the manufacturer's position is, before anyone starts.
What to do now
- Establish which growth you actually have before buying a treatment
- Ask about method — decline pressure washing on asphalt or cedar
- Cut back overhanging branches to restore drying, which is the durable fix
- Keep valleys and gutters clear of debris that holds moisture
- Treat heavy moss as a reason to inspect the covering beneath it
