When asphalt shingle granule loss is a concern

Some loose granules can occur with new shingles and normal weathering. Concentrated bare areas, exposed asphalt, rapid change, impact, or other roof symptoms deserve closer evaluation.

Why loss accelerates once it starts

The granule layer is not decorative. It shields the asphalt from ultraviolet light, and once it is gone from an area the shingle beneath ages considerably faster than the rest of the roof. That is why granule loss tends to compound: more exposed asphalt means quicker deterioration of the surrounding material.

It is also why this is a timing signal rather than an emergency. A roof shedding granules is usually still shedding water. What it is telling you is that the remaining life is shorter than the calendar age suggests, and that planning a replacement beats being forced into one in February.
