What granules do
Granules collected in a gutter do not by themselves date the roof or prove storm damage. The pattern, location, surrounding shingle condition, roof age, drainage, and recent weather provide context.
Signs that warrant attention
- Dark or shiny areas where asphalt is exposed
- Circular or irregular areas of concentrated loss
- Cracking, curling, splitting, blistering, or missing shingles
- Large recent change after a weather event
- Granules paired with active leaks or brittle material
- Different patterns on slopes with different exposure
What a roofer may compare
A useful inspection looks at representative slopes, flashings, penetrations, ridges, valleys, fastening or sealing issues, and any repair history. Photos should show both close details and their location on the roof.
If damage is limited, a repair may be possible. If the roof is broadly worn and compatible material cannot be integrated reliably, replacement may deserve consideration.
Do not rely on a single symptom
A replacement decision should consider leaks, material condition, flashings, decking indicators, attic evidence, repairability, remaining serviceability, and proposal scope—not granules alone.
Patterns matter more than the gutter alone
Uniform weathering across an exposed slope suggests something different from a concentrated patch below a downspout, a line of mechanical damage, or isolated marks after a storm. North- and south-facing slopes can also age differently.
The roofer should connect close-up observations to the full roof and compare affected and unaffected areas. A decision based only on a handful of loose granules lacks that context.
Questions for the inspection
- Is asphalt exposed or is the color variation superficial?
- Is loss widespread or localized?
- Are shingles cracking, curling, blistering, or unsealed?
- Do flashings and penetrations remain serviceable?
- Can a limited area be repaired and matched?
- What other conditions support replacement or continued monitoring?

Why loss accelerates once it starts
The granule layer is not decorative. It shields the asphalt from ultraviolet light, and once it is gone from an area the shingle beneath ages considerably faster than the rest of the roof. That is why granule loss tends to compound: more exposed asphalt means quicker deterioration of the surrounding material.
It is also why this is a timing signal rather than an emergency. A roof shedding granules is usually still shedding water. What it is telling you is that the remaining life is shorter than the calendar age suggests, and that planning a replacement beats being forced into one in February.
